There's a particular kind of irony in building enterprise communication software and finding out you've been laid off via that software, on a call hosted by that software, with HR using features your team built. The all-hands was on Webex. I helped build several of the features they used. The notification came through our internal comms platform. I helped build that too. My manager had to deliver the news via a tool I'd spent eighteen months improving. Afterwards they sent me a message saying the work I'd done mattered. The work mattered enough to use it to manage my exit. Not enough to keep me to keep improving it.
